My name is Miriam Garcia. I'm an English-Spanish translator, born in Madrid, Spain.
So you see I'm not a native English speaker, please forgive my mistakes. I have two kids of 10 and 8 and a very patient husband. My former education was in Chemistry (yikes!) which I've come to loath… more or less. I work at home ever since I became a translator 4 years ago and I had never been so happy. From home I'm always available for my children's needs, going to the doctor, school meetings, you know... all that stuff. And most importantly, I can be with them ever since they leave school everyday... I only regret that I didn't change profession earlier! Just imagine, no bosses (wow, that's the best part), no travelling to an office, come rain or come shine, no rigid schedules… and lots of time to wander around in the Internet, visiting all kinds of wicked blogs, like food blogs… There's where I got the weird idea of starting my own blog. After all, I love cooking since long ago, and I can take decent pictures... and… I can let out all kinds of weird thoughts so that I can avoid going to the therapist… The perfect scenario for me!
How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?
I've just joined the Daring Cooks and I wanted to introduce myself.
What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?
My favorite kitchen gadget is my egg slicer… don't ask me why. And my favorite kitchen appliance is my Thermomix.
Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?
Friends and relatives usually love my quiches, Lorraine or not, and also my Spanish tortilla. Some of them even dream of my tarte Tatin. My eldest son goes nuts over my double chocolate tart.
Is there any recipe and/or technique that we haven’t covered yet that you’d really like to make/learn?
I can't really answer, since I've just joined.
Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Genre of music? Actor? Actress?
I am a KEEN movie watcher, that's why I couldn't choose only one movie. I'm one of those old-fashioned people who love Classical cinema, remember? Casablanca, Notorious, the musicals of the 50's... Cary Grant, James Stewart, Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire… I get carried away! Regarding music, I couldn't choose one single genre either, I'm very eclectic, I range from Van Morrison to Lila Downs… a lot of people. I read a lot as well, but I must admit that lately I read many... cookbooks, I find them fascinating
You’ve just won $5000.00!!!
This really takes a lot of imagination (no bills? no mortgage?). I would travel, no doubt. To some spa. To recover. From everything.
What is the ultimate comfort food to you?
A hot chocolate with chestnuts roasted on a fire (sounds like Nat King Cole, but we also have chestnuts in Spain and I love them).
Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite… why?
My favorite season is Fall, no doubt. I love feeling again the fresher air after the scorching heat of Summer, wearing sweaters again. I love also all the food you can cook in Fall… ripe fruits, mushrooms… all kinds of delicious stuff.
Other than cooking and/or baking… what hobbies do you enjoy?
I've always loved all things handmade, I used to make lace, but that was before I had kids, I was a different person back then. I like painting, going to the movies, travelling (when I have the money) and reading.
How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?
I started my blog in June 2008, but I really didn't take it seriously until March 2009. I love the exchange of ideas that comes from sharing recipes in the net. In the last months it has helped me to have my mind full while going through some work shortage (remember I'm a freelance translator, work has been somewhat low this year), I have improved my photography skills (still in progress!) and I'm learning xml by tweaking my page, what else can I ask for?
And I think my favorite post is yet to be written, because I always find things to be improved when I read my own posts after a while.
What’s your favorite cookbook for desserts/baking? What’s your favorite cookbook for savory/cooking?
Really, I couldn't choose, it would be like asking me who do you love more, Mummy or Daddy.
If you could bake/cook with other Daring Bakers/Daring Cooks, who would they be and why?
Mmm, I still don't know so many. Can I answer this question later on?
What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?
I love poplars. They make the nicest murmur when the wind blows through them. Find a poplar and listen. There's no other tree that makes such a sound.
Do you have a favorite local restaurant? If so, why is it your favorite and what kind of food is served there?
Well, I don't go out that much since I had my kids and when I do, we go to not-very-challenging places (does it sound familiar to anyone?). Therefore, I couldn't say.
Who taught you how to cook and/or bake?
Partly my mother and partly myself.
What’s your favorite holiday and why?
I like Christmas… it's a great excuse to cook all kinds of extravagant sweet treats.
Reading any good books lately? Which ones?!
Cook with Jamie… sorry. Mmmm, and also In defense of food by Michael Pollan.
You’ve had a rough week. We feel your pain. How do you relax after a rough week?
That's not to be published… and also cooking something interesting.
Where is your favorite vacation (holiday) destination?
I don't have one, we always like to try new places.
What is your favorite cooking/food related magazine? Why?
Don't have one.
Aside from chocolate for most of us, do you have a food addiction?
I do have an addiction: smoked salmon. Good at any time of the day.
What did you eat for dinner last night? Did you prepare it or someone else?
I ate eggplants stuffed with ragout, with a grilled cheese topping. Of course I prepared them, my husband does the washing
What’s your guilty pleasure?
What kind of colors do you like? Pastels? Earth tones? Brights? Neons? Etc.
Definitely not neons. Men would have a hard time answering this question.
If you had the choice of a free kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom makeover – which would you choose and why?
My kitchen because I'd love to have a wider and better oven. I also bake bread very often, that's why. And I would like to lower the height of my next top cupboards… I'm small and no one seems to notice.
