Member's Blog Name:
Melanie is Hungry

My name is Melanie and I am a 26 year old administrative assistant at a university.

I am currently applying to culinary school (to start in January) and love to bake and cook as often as possible. Other than working in a boring office, I have 2 cats (who are absolute terrors) and a lovely hubby (who is an amazing cook!) We live a “green” life in the Boston area and don’t own a car... instead, we ride our bikes everywhere

How long have you been a Daring Baker/Daring Cook and what’s your favorite thing about being in the group(s) so far?

I have only just joined but I enjoy the forums because they share so much information and I get to find all kinds of amazing blogs and see other people’s food photography skills.

What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? How about your favorite kitchen appliance?

My favorite gadget is the wooden spoon. I feel like you can use it while cooking pretty much anything. A lot of the time, I use a spoon instead of the mixer because I have more control with it. My favorite appliance is the refrigerator. Who doesn’t like a fridge?

Are you known for making a certain dish or dessert? If so, what is it?

I am known for making fruity desserts (cobblers, crisps, pies). My best is probably an apple crisp I learned when I was in elementary school.

Do you have a favorite movie? Book? Genre of music? Actor? Actress?

My favorite movie is Love Actually. I really love all holiday movies in general and it doesn’t hurt that it has a love story (or a few love stories) in it to keep me happy. Smile

You’ve just won $5000.00!!! But it comes with some stipulations.. you can’t spend it on your kids or your significant other! This is all YOURS. What would you spend it on?

First, I would buy myself a KitchenAid mixer. Those mixers have been calling out my name for years now but I can never afford one. The rest would probably be spent on cast iron pots and pans.

What is the ultimate comfort food to you?

Any meal from when I was a kid or broccoli chicken from the local Chinese take out place near our house.

Which season (Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall) is your favorite.. why?

Fall... Because of apples and pumpkins, they make the BEST desserts!

Other than cooking and/or baking.. what hobbies do you enjoy?

I’m a TV blogger so I watch a lot of TV... especially soap operas. They are probably what I spend the most time on other than food.

How long have you been blogging? Do you like it? What’s your favorite post you’ve written?

I have been blogging since 2004. I’ve had so many blogs about my life, my hobbies, my career change, and my TV watching skills. I love blogging and especially love getting comments and encouragement from others on my blogs. I don’t have a favorite post but I do enjoy posting food photography that I take.

What’s your favorite cookbook for desserts/baking? What’s your favorite cookbook for savory/cooking?

My favorite dessert cookbook is Maida Heatter’s Book of Great Desserts. I do not have a favorite savory cooking book.

What’s your favorite flower and/or plant?

I love ivy. Mostly, I love ivy because it’s hard to kill it. Haha!

Do you have a favorite local restaurant? If so, why is it your favorite and what kind of food is served there?

One of my favorite restaurants in the Boston area is Henrietta’s Table in Harvard Square (Cambridge). They serve country fare that is all cooked using local products. It is amazing and the ambiance in the restaurant is so welcoming. I also love Ming Tsai’s Blue Ginger in Wellesley, MA for a more fancy meal. They serve asian fusion.

Who taught you how to cook and/or bake?

My mother taught me to bake and my husband taught me to cook.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

My favorite holiday is Christmas because I love the cheerfulness during that time of year... and I love the christmas music! I also love the opportunity to bake every day without my husband complaining about me making him fat!

Reading any good books lately? Which ones?!

I’m currently reading James Beard’s biography and it is pretty interesting.

What did you eat for dinner last night?

Taco soup. I prepared it (one of my mother’s recipes... aka comfort food!)

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Terrible reality TV (i.e. The Bachelor/Bachelorette)

What kind of colors do you like?

I like primary colors and earth tones.

If you had the choice of a free kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom makeover – which would you choose and why?

I would choose a kitchen so that I could design it around my needs and get rid of my ugly green countertops!
